Grounding and Earthing - Latest health craze or Natural healing?
Grounding, also known as earthing, refers to direct contact between the earth's surface and our skin.
Now the idea that we are meant to connect with the earth regularly totally makes sense to me but can something so simple, like walking around barefoot outside on your lawn really be effective in supporting vibrant health?
Remember when you were a young child, running around outside with your friends feeling wild and free, Well I imagine those days were mostly spent barefoot right? Unfortunately as we grow older, majority of our days are spent working indoors, in buildings with a constant WIFI connection running through the air, hands furiously typing away on keyboards and walking around with shoes on our feet. And if you do happen to work outside, I bet Health and Safety requirements see you wearing shoes too.
We even exercise inside, walking on treadmills AGAIN WITH SHOES ON OUR FEET! And if you do take your exercise outdoors, I imagine you aren't really making much connection with the soil, sand or grass that you are working out on....
It seems like our connection with nature takes a back seat in this modern world we are living in and for those of us working in cities or highly populated areas it can be even more problematic with concrete footpaths and metal roads acting as as constant barrier, separating us from the natural ground underneath.
So how does it work?
Our bodies literally make their own electricity. You will find atoms made up of positively charged protons, negatively charged electrons, and neutrally charged neutrons floating around inside each and every one of us. Modern technology and its electromagnetic fields can cause free radicals to build up in our bodies and is capable of throwing that electrical energy off balance leaving us with a build up of positive charge. Not cool!
According to Wikipedia 'Atmospheric electricity is always present, and during fine weather away from thunderstorms, the air above the surface of Earth is positively charged, while the Earth's surface charge is negative'. This is where the idea that Grounding (coming into direct contact with the earth via dirt, rock or water) can even out this positive charge in our bodies and return it to a neutral state. Pretty cool huh? Mother nature never ceases to amaze me!
Improved emotional well-being, reduction in stress, better sleep, less joint stiffness and swelling, reduced inflammation and increased energy are among the growing list of reported benefits.
So how do we reap the benefits?
It's easy and totally enjoyable too. Walking on the beach, taking a dip in the cold salty ocean, gardening with your bare hands, enjoying a picnic on soft fresh grass or simply taking 5 minutes to rest your feet on it, leaves you feeling fresh and energized, Coincidence? I don't think so!
With no bad side effects and nothing to lose (except excess positive charge of course!), there is no denying that time spent connecting with nature, enjoying the outdoors and grounding yourself really does the body good so you can totally count me in!
In GOOD health,
